Movie Review: Walk the Line

Facts of this film:
  • Oscar Academy Awards Nominates on Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Editing, Best Achievement in Sound and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role 2006
  • Directed by: James Mangold (Identity, Kate & Leopold)
  • Starring with: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon (Oscar winner on Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role 2006), Robert Patrick and Ginnifer Goodwin

A chronicle of the life of the country music legend, Johnny Cash, from his early days on an Arkansas cotton farm to his rise to fame with Sun Records in Memphis.

Golden Globe winners Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon star as Johnny Cash and June Carter in this inspiring true story of one man’s unwavering devotion to his sound, his message and the greatest love of his life.

The story of Johnny Cash traces his childhood under a distant father (Robert Patrick) to his early attempts at a music career. During a tour with the likes of Elvis (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne), and while still married, he meets and falls in love with singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). June helps Johnny battle and beat his drug dependency, and Johnny proposes to her during their performance on stage in February 1968.

As a solid and entertaining film, Walk the Line works less as a movie than an actors' showcase for its stars. Joaquin Phoenix's total immersion into the skin of singer Johnny Cash is startling.

Singer. Rebel. Outlaw. Hero. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as dark as the night. The legendary Man in Black, with revolutionized music and forged his legacy as a genuine American icon – Joaquin Phoenix brings to us the best of Johnny Cash’s story.

New Release on DVD: The Lake House

Facts of this film:

  • Directed by: Alejandro Agresti
  • Starring with: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Christopher Plummer, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Willeke van Ammelrooy

If you enjoy love stories, then you should delight in this modern day fairy tale. Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves complement each other extremely well and manage to develop a tangible chemistry together despite the unique nature of their "long distance" (in time) relationship. This film is about emotions, interpersonal relationships and personal discovery, and needs to be engaged with your heart, not your mind.

Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock), a doctor who has begun work in a hospital in Chicago, is moving out of her lake house to a new flat in the centre of the city. Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) a young architect, who's working in the construction of a new complex of houses, is the new owner of the lake house. Alex and Kate are maintaining a correspondence, talking about the house matters, by sending each other letters which are put in the lake house's letter box. But a strange thing is happening because both of them find that the letter box is working as a kind of time communication channel between the year 2004, which Alex is living in, and 2006, the year that Kate's actually living in. After sending each other many letters in which they talk about their lives, they find they are falling in love. What will happen to them? Watch this romantic drama to find out the answer.

So if you enjoy fantasy and romance, then you should enjoy this unconventional love story.

New Release on DVD: Hoodwinked

Facts of this film:

  • Directed by: Cory Edwards and Todd Edwards
  • Starring with: Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, James Belushi, Patrick Warburton, Anthony Anderson, Xzibit, Chazz Palminteri and Andy Dick

So you think you know the story of “Little Red Riding Hood”. Don’t be too sure. . . One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out - into a high-energy, imaginative entertaining tale. With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for everyone. When the police arrive at Granny’s cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red (Anne Hathaway), Granny (Glenn Close), the Big Bad Wolf (Patrick Warburton) and the Woodsman (James Belushi) are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in this raucous, genre-busting, animated gem.

As for quality of this animation, which was clearly done on the cheap, you don't notice it. The basic story quality is there and I think it is also possible that this film may nab a best song nomination - some very catchy original tunes, well orchestrated and well sung. Overall, Hoodwinked is not only worth the trip to the theatre, but is also worth buying the DVD as well to add to your collection.

New Release on DVD: X-Men, The Last Stand

Facts of this film:

  • Directed by: Brett Ratner (Rush hour, The Family man, Rush Hour 2, Red Dragon and After the Sunset)
  • Starring with: Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Shawn Ashmore, Aaron Stanford and Ben Foster

X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero franchise, and it's an exciting one with a splash of fresh, new characters. When a scientist named Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, it raises an interesting philosophical question: is mutant power a disease that needs a cure, or is it a benefit that homo superior enjoys over "normal" human beings? No surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants resist the idea that they need to be cured, and declare war on the human race. The action spins as the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry) try to stop Magneto’s threats.

If you are a fan of superhero-type films, X-Men: The Last Stand is a great film to watch. It’s full of action and adventure and the whole family will enjoy it.
