New Release: The New World

Facts of this movie:
  • American Latino Media Arts Awards winner: Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture - Q'Orianka Kilcher
  • Oscar® Academy Awards Nominated: Best Achievement in Cinematography
  • Directed by: Terrence Malick
  • Starring with: Colin Farrell, Q'Orianka Kilcher, Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer, Wes Studi and August Schellenberg

The legend of Pocahontas and John Smith receives a luminous and essential retelling by Terrence Malick (director). This film of the State of Virginia's first white settlers, around 1607, provides an amazing insight to the life and setting of a colony world.

A bond is formed between the explorer Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Native American princess, Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher) when the two cultures meet on the shores of a new land. The film washes over you with minimal dialogue. The story-telling is a stream-of-consciousness narration - a technique Malick has used before but never to such degree - creating a movie you ‘feel’ rather than ‘watch’. The film's beauty (Oscar® Academy Awards Nominated - Cinematography) and the production design seems very organic. In fact, organic is a great label for the movie as a whole - from the dreadful conditions of early Jamestown to the luminous love story that develops. Malick with a cast that includes Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale, delivers his first exceptional-performance film.

Star Wars Trilogy

Facts of the films:

Written by: George Lucas
Starring with: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and David Prowse

The original three films written by George Lucas: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi screened between 1977 to 1983, and brought to our screens one of the best science fiction movie series of all time.

The Trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming a cultural phenomenon - a defining event for its generation. On the surface, the Star Wars story is simply a rollicking and humorous space fantasy with excellent film graphics, but audiences became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away,…", its amazing special effects, and the mythology of Jedi knights, the Force, and Droids. Over the course of the three films: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983) - Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) join the Rebel alliance in a galactic war against the Empire, the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), and eventually the all-powerful Emperor. Empire is generally considered the best of the films with Jedi being the most uneven, but all three are vastly superior to the more technologically impressive ones that followed - Episode I, The Phantom Menace (1999) and Episode II, Attack of the Clones (2002).

Over a lifetime spent in the ring, Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) has trained and managed some incredible fighters. The most important lesson he teaches his boxers is the one that rules his life: above all, always protect yourself. In the wake of a painful estrangement from his daughter, Frankie has been unwilling to let himself get close to anyone for a very long time and is a bit of a loner. His only friend, Scrap (Morgan Freeman), an ex-boxer who looks after Frankie's gym, knows that beneath the gruff exterior is a man who, for the last 25 years, has been seeking forgiveness.

Then, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) walks into his gym and won over by her sheer determination, he begrudgingly takes her on. In between exasperating and inspiring each other, the two come to discover that they share a common spirit that transcends the pain and loss of their pasts. They find in each other a sense of family they lost long ago…

“Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love.”
