The legend of Pocahontas and John Smith receives a luminous and essential retelling by Terrence Malick (director). This film of the State of Virginia's first white settlers, around 1607, provides an amazing insight to the life and setting of a colony world.
A bond is formed between the explorer Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Native American princess, Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher) when the two cultures meet on the shores of a new land. The film washes over you with minimal dialogue. The story-telling is a stream-of-consciousness narration - a technique Malick has used before but never to such degree - creating a movie you ‘feel’ rather than ‘watch’. The film's beauty (Oscar® Academy Awards Nominated - Cinematography) and the production design seems very organic. In fact, organic is a great label for the movie as a whole - from the dreadful conditions of early Jamestown to the luminous love story that develops. Malick with a cast that includes Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale, delivers his first exceptional-performance film.
