Over a lifetime spent in the ring, Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) has trained and managed some incredible fighters. The most important lesson he teaches his boxers is the one that rules his life: above all, always protect yourself. In the wake of a painful estrangement from his daughter, Frankie has been unwilling to let himself get close to anyone for a very long time and is a bit of a loner. His only friend, Scrap (Morgan Freeman), an ex-boxer who looks after Frankie's gym, knows that beneath the gruff exterior is a man who, for the last 25 years, has been seeking forgiveness.

Then, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) walks into his gym and won over by her sheer determination, he begrudgingly takes her on. In between exasperating and inspiring each other, the two come to discover that they share a common spirit that transcends the pain and loss of their pasts. They find in each other a sense of family they lost long ago…

“Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love.”
