Movie Review: Man on Fire

Facts of this film:

  • Directed by: Tony Scott (Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Enemy of the State and Spy Game)
  • Starring with: Denzel Washington (Oscar winner on best actor 2002, Training Day), Dakota Fanning, Marc Anthony, Radha Mitchell, Christopher Walken, Giancarlo Giannini and Rachel Ticotin

A wave of kidnappings has swept through Mexico, and in one six-day period, there were twenty-four abductions, leading many parents to hire bodyguards for their children.

Into this world enters John Creasy (Denzel Washington), a burned out ex-CIA operative, who has given up on life. Creasy's friend Rayburn brings him to Mexico City to be a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning), daughter of industrialist Samuel Ramos and his wife Lisa. Creasy is not interested in being a bodyguard, especially to a child, but for lack of something better to do, he accepts the assignment. Creasy barely tolerates the precocious child but slowly, they start to understand each other and become friends.

Creasy's new-found purpose in life is shattered when Pita is kidnapped. His firey rage is unleashed on anyone involved in or profiting from the kidnapping. No one can stop him.

Movie Review: Remember the Titans

Facts of this movie:

  • Directed by: Boaz Yakin
  • Starring with: Denzel Washington (The Bone Collector, Training Day and Man on Fire), Will Patton, Ryan Hurst, Craig Kirkwood, Donald Faison, Kip Pardue, Ethan Suplee, Hayden Panettiere, Earl Poitier and Ryan Gosling

Remember the Titians” is one of the best dramas of all time.

Although in sight of the Washington Monument over the river in the nation's capital, suburban Virginian schools have been segregated for generations. Under federal mandate, one black and one white high school are closed and the students are sent to T.C. Williams High School in order for them to integrate. This tumultuous year is seen through the eyes of members of the football team where the man previously coaching the team of the black school is made head coach over the head of successful white coach. Based on the actual events of 1971, the team becomes the unifying symbol for the community, as the boys and the adults learn to depend on and trust each other.

With only one major star (Denzel Washington), an appealing cast of fresh unknowns, and a winning emphasis on substance over self-indulgent style, Boaz Yakin's “Remember the Titans” is a football movie that will be fondly remembered by anyone who sees it.

New Release: Over the Hedge

Facts of this animation:

  • Directed by: Tim Johnson (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and Antz), Karey Kirkpatrick
  • Starring with: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carrel, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner, Nick Nolte, Thomas Haden Church, Allison Janney, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Avril Lavigne, Omid Djalili, Sami Kirkpatrick, Shane Buamel and Madison Davenport

The manicured lawns and overstuffed garbage cans of suburbia become a buffet for woodland creatures in Over the Hedge. A self-centered, scheming raccoon named RJ (voiced by Bruce Willis) steals and accidentally destroys the hoard of an angry bear, who gives the raccoon a week to replace it. RJ despairs, until he meets an odd gang of foragers. By convincing these friendly beasts that the suburban homesteads on the other side of a recently erected hedge are a mother-lode of cast-off food, RJ hopes to dupe them into doing his gathering. But when the suburban residents realize they've been invaded by woodland pests, an exterminator is called in to take care of the problem. The storyline of Over the Hedge is pure formula - your basic "family matters more than anything" lesson. Moment to moment, the movie is delightfully interesting and clever, and the satirical jabs at consumerism are actually funny.
